Results depend on your network, your distance from our server and current load. For the most accurate reading, test over a wired connection with nothing else streaming or downloading.

This test measures four things: how fast you can download, how fast you can upload, how long a round trip to the server takes (ping), and how much that round trip varies (jitter). It runs entirely against our own servers — there is no third-party embed and nothing to install.

What each number means

The four measurements answer different questions, and the one that matters most depends on what you actually do online:

  • Download (Mbps) — how quickly data reaches you. This governs streaming quality, how fast pages and files load, and how many devices can watch video at once.
  • Upload (Mbps) — how quickly you can send data out. This matters for video calls, cloud backup, publishing large files and online gaming. Many connections give you far less upload than download.
  • Ping (ms) — the round-trip time for a small packet. Low ping is what makes a connection feel responsive; it is far more important than raw bandwidth for gaming and calls.
  • Jitter (ms) — how much ping varies between measurements. High jitter is what makes a video call stutter even when the speed test result looks fine, because packets arrive unevenly rather than slowly.

What speed do you actually need?

Real requirements are lower than most marketing suggests. As rough guidance for a single simultaneous activity:

  • Standard-definition video, browsing, email — a few Mbps is enough.
  • HD video streaming — around 5 Mbps per stream.
  • 4K video streaming — around 25 Mbps per stream.
  • Video calls — a few Mbps each way, but far more sensitive to ping and jitter than to raw speed.
  • Online gaming — very little bandwidth; ping and jitter are what decide the experience.

Why your result is lower than the speed you pay for

A gap is normal, and the cause is usually between your router and your device rather than on the line itself. Wi-Fi is the most common culprit: distance, walls, an older standard or a congested channel can all cut throughput dramatically. The same connection tested over Ethernet will often be substantially faster.

Other common factors: other devices using the connection during the test, a browser or VPN adding overhead, or the device itself being too busy to saturate a fast line. Advertised speeds are also typically "up to" figures measured to the router, not through your home network to a laptop in another room.

If you want the cleanest possible measurement, test over a wired connection, close other applications, and pause anything streaming or syncing in the background.

Why results vary between tests and between tools

A speed test measures one path at one moment: from your device, across your network and your provider's, to a specific server. Change any part of that and the number changes. Different testing services use different servers in different places, so comparing their results directly is not meaningful.

For a useful picture, run the same test a few times at different times of day and look at the pattern. A single figure taken once tells you very little; a consistent result across several runs tells you what your connection actually does.
