Results depend on your network, your distance from our server and current load. For the most accurate reading, test over a wired connection with nothing else streaming or downloading.
This test measures four things: how fast you can download, how fast you can upload, how long a round trip to the server takes (ping), and how much that round trip varies (jitter). It runs entirely against our own servers — there is no third-party embed and nothing to install.
The four measurements answer different questions, and the one that matters most depends on what you actually do online:
Real requirements are lower than most marketing suggests. As rough guidance for a single simultaneous activity:
A gap is normal, and the cause is usually between your router and your device rather than on the line itself. Wi-Fi is the most common culprit: distance, walls, an older standard or a congested channel can all cut throughput dramatically. The same connection tested over Ethernet will often be substantially faster.
Other common factors: other devices using the connection during the test, a browser or VPN adding overhead, or the device itself being too busy to saturate a fast line. Advertised speeds are also typically "up to" figures measured to the router, not through your home network to a laptop in another room.
If you want the cleanest possible measurement, test over a wired connection, close other applications, and pause anything streaming or syncing in the background.
A speed test measures one path at one moment: from your device, across your network and your provider's, to a specific server. Change any part of that and the number changes. Different testing services use different servers in different places, so comparing their results directly is not meaningful.
For a useful picture, run the same test a few times at different times of day and look at the pattern. A single figure taken once tells you very little; a consistent result across several runs tells you what your connection actually does.
It depends entirely on use. HD streaming needs around 5 Mbps per stream and 4K around 25 Mbps, while gaming and video calls need very little bandwidth but low ping and jitter. For a household with several people streaming at once, 100 Mbps is comfortable.
Most often Wi-Fi rather than the line itself — distance, walls, an older standard or a congested channel all reduce throughput. Other devices using the connection, a VPN, or a busy computer will also lower the result. Testing over Ethernet usually gives a much higher figure.
Ping is how long a round trip to the server takes. Jitter is how much that time varies between measurements. Low ping makes a connection feel responsive; low jitter keeps calls and video smooth, because packets arrive at a predictable rate.
Each test uses its own servers in its own locations, with different numbers of parallel connections and different measurement methods. You are measuring a different path each time, so the numbers are not directly comparable.
Usually somewhat. Traffic is encrypted and routed through an extra server, which adds overhead and often distance. The effect on ping is generally more noticeable than the effect on download speed, particularly if the VPN server is far away.
Use a wired Ethernet connection if you can, close other applications, disconnect a VPN, and make sure nothing else on the network is streaming or downloading. Then run the test a few times and compare, rather than relying on a single figure.
